What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/13 07:53 It's really just the moment in which everything else becomes insignificant; when everything disappears for a while. That's when the lightness overtakes me and I am floating beside myself, watching. I see myself commit little mistakes, but I don't judge them. And I see little moments that are surprisingly good. But I don't judge them either. I just notice them. Everything happening is good because it leads to another jump. And so it comes back again and again to the ecstasy of it.

I was reading a book and I read this paragraph. The author was not referring to skydiving. I paraphrased and added a few lines, but I felt it hit the mark and thought I would share.

I am interested in what skydiving means to you.

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/13 09:07 Great passage, Heath! I feel similarly about part of song I know. The song is not about skydiving and is actually called The Dream. For me, it fits.

Now she flies over clouds in twilight skies. Nothing to bind her, no one will find her this high. Far above the rainy weather, all plans have come together, and for the first time she feels just fine.

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/13 11:19 I love when you are under canopy and you can see for miles.... there is such a quiet calm and the only thing you hear is your heart beating!!

Sometimes faster than others depending on your pack job and opening

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/13 18:53 First, would have to be the way every problem in life doesn't matter once we are on call... focus on the dive, kinda like meditation, only thinking about one thing.

Second, is the confidence the skydive builds; turning points and then good canopy flight & landing pattern!

Third, who knew jet fuel smelled so good?!

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/14 15:18 I can't even begin to list the things I love about this sport and what it means to me... But one of the big things that comes to mind most is how you never stop learning. There is always a new challange, there is always something new to try, there is always someone new walking through the door starting from scratch to make you appreciate how far you have come. Okay, I have to stop there or I'll go on forever!

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/14 15:19 That is a good question. Skydiving is it for me! it is my passion, my love, my freedom and puts life in my soul.
My first jump was, just for the thrill, to cheat death and rub in the face of others. That has changed so much over the years, 7 years and I will hopefully hit my 200th this weekend, I had 2 periods of not jumping and was just trying to keep current and I did feel bad, I was doing the best that I could, but you know I would hear "kerry uncurerrent again ?" that really almost broke me. So when paul and Jo opened at sullivan I told myself jump, jump, jump and never look back. Skydiving is my breath. I have so many friends and laughed so hard I cried.
I have learned to take the bad with the good. watch the lousy weather, freeze my ass of in the winter, just to keep going with my jumps. If you are a skydiver with 1 or 10000 jumps I love ya, for you have tasted the sky and touched the heaven of earth.
There are two things that would ever stop me from jumping, death and quadriplegia and trust me I say that with all of my heart.
So Heath, Thank you for the question, I really enjoyed looking back over the past 7 years and thank you to everybody that has ever jumped with me. Paul and Jo Thank you very much for being the DZO's of STL SKYDIVING !!!

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/15 08:50 I love sitting around and hearing stories from before I was in the sport. I love getting on the ground from a jump and telling everyone how it went and hearing how there jump went. I love during the week checking the forum and getting excited about the weekend. I love the feeling of a smooth on heading opening. I LOVE THE EXIT! Standing at the door and getting or giving the count. I love looking at other people's face in freefall and knowing exactly what they are thinking. Now, if we could only figure a way for our mains to pack themselves and it would be perfect. My attitude has changed; I have found that little things don’t bother me as much anymore, I am happy.

Re:What Does Skydiving Mean to You - 2008/08/17 20:06 Skydiving is the last thing that most people would do, but I do. It's that moment when all of your friends, new and old reach out to you and without a word say "have a great skydive," the engines cut back, and the door opens. Everything comes together in that one moment as you leave the relative quiet of the plane and enter the commotion of the exit and time just stands still. Then the skydive settles in to the surreal silence of freefall...for a brief second you're king of the world and then deploy your parachute. It's coming together with your friends who just get it, they don't question it, they know you better than anyone else. It's also meeting those who have decided to venture into the private club. Some decide just to touch their toe into the pool and then you have those lucky few who dive in and they are accepted regardless of their "other" life because they are skydivers. There story is mingled and mixed with all the other stories of their friends who understand what it means when the green light goes on.
